Anime & Manga Types

Most anime and manga are intended for ages 17 & up. Therefore, parental guidance is advised! The meaning of some anime & manga you might find of interest.


  • Bara is short for "Barazoku" manga or anime aimed at a gay male audience
  • Bishojo -"pretty girl" Refers to any young, attractive woman, but also used to imply sexual availability, as in "bishojo games".
  • Bishonen "beautiful boy", sometimes abbreviated "Bishie". Ideally beautiful a young man having an androgynous, effeminate, or an ambiguous gender.
  • Ecchi do not show sexual intercourse or genitalia. Instead, sexual themes are hinted at, and much is left up to the imagination of the viewer.
  • Hentai  translatsion “pervert” in Japanese. This is the R-18 (mature) domain of the anime world which common depicts nudity and highly explicit content. Unlike ecchi, this genre focuses on its explicit sexual content rather than on its storyline and progression. That is why the shows in this category are usually brief and lacking in substance.
  • Josei  literally means 'woman' female equivalent of Seinen, targetd at females of 18-30. In Japanese, the word josei means only "female" and is not directly indicative of sexual matter.
  • Seinen  manga or anime targeted at older males, usually 18-30. This type of anime has a wide variety of art styles and more variation in subject matter.
  • Shoujo literally means Young Girl. Refers to mangas and anime targeted at young girls.
  • Shounen  literally means a few years, but in this case it refers to young boys.
  • Shonen ai (boy love), featuring platonic relationships between young boys
  • Yaoi also known as Boys' Love (BL), is a Japanese genre of fictional media focusing on romantic or sexual relationships between male characters, aimed at a female audience and usually created by female authors. Although yaoi is primarily aimed at a female audience, the genre also attracts some male readers.
  • Yuri is the much more sexually explicit counterpart of shoujo-ai. This genre covers female-to-female relationships (typically older girls) in a much mature light. If shoujo-ai focuses mor eon blooming feelings, yuri commonly goes all-the-way both in romance and intimacy.

  • Harem - either one male character living with several females or vice verse, commonly known  as Reverse Harem

  • Horror - ghosts, demons, vampire, ghouls and zombies
  • Lolicon - A genre of manga and anime wherein childlike female characters are depicted in an erotic manner. Portmanteau for "Lolita complex ".
  • Mecha - Series that feature mecha are divided into two subgenres: "Super robots", where the mecha have unrealistic powers and the focus is more on the fighting and robots themselves, and "Real robots", where the mecha have more realistic powers and there is more drama and focus on the mecha's pilots.
  • Manawa is the general Korean term for comics and print cartoons (common usage also includes animated cartoons)
  • Martial arts - tournaments or battle  driven stories

  • Supernatural -  either dark and menacing ,or comic subplots.
  • Toddlercon - A subset of Lolicon and Shotacon where toddler characters are depicted in an erotic manner
  • Vampire- horror and/or comedic characters
  • Webtoon is a term used to describe South Korean webcomics or Manawa that are published online.
  • Zombies - the undead flesh eaters, supernatural, sometime sci-fi mixed with horror
